I mean, the greatest, the latchkey kids that got left at home that got to do anything. So from from little facetious ness there, but a little truth also, you know, we were the, the generation that got to do anything without the supervision. Because I would have seen that baby boomers were the ones that essentially made latchkey kids. And I don't think they'll have the opportunity. I think that was a big piece of my childhood. Was that independence, that willingness to explore and being encouraged to do so because nowadays I think those there's more training wheels and less bruises incurred. 00:25:06:18 - 00:25:38:18 Stephanie And realistically, Gen X, we were the first generation. His mothers went to work en masse and and they didn't really know, you know, what they were doing. Like, from a societal perspective, we weren't really set up to support working mothers. And so it wasn't like there was just childcare readily available. And there was a lot more of, sort of I think over time, kids, like, became more infantilized as they grew older, where with us it's like, you know, oh, well, they're five. 00:25:38:18 - 00:25:57:07 Stephanie They'll be able to like, keep themselves alive for a few hours, you know, and, and there just sort of was just that sense of like, survival as, that we were, that was sort of ingrained in us. So I think that affected the latchkey aspect of it a lot is like our moms all went to work. we didn't have a plan in place for that. 00:25:57:09 - 00:26:00:06 Ed probably wasn't the best thing, but it wasn't a choice either. 00:26:00:06 - 00:26:22:08 Chloe So, yeah, I agree. I think at least when you mentioned the training wheels, especially my generation, if you think about it like now, like it'll be first place, second place, third place, you lost, you lost. At least I feel like I'm a little bit more, more sensitive, especially to, like, losing or like all these other things because there's always that cushion, especially with like, my parents. And I'm grateful for that. Probably see my generation as, like, lazy or, like, just kind of like to go with the flow, like, who cares? And this and that, which is like kind of true, but also like I don't perceive myself as lazy necessarily. I see as myself exploring multitudes of different options. and also like, it's true, like I don't care that much about money, like at all. 00:27:38:04 - 00:28:04:08 Chloe I would rather have a job that represents my purpose and me. That whole I want, I want, I want me, me, me. I think a lot of us feel that way from my generation, but not in like a self-serving way, more in the sense of, like, what am I giving to the world? I think it was like 55 percentile for Gen Z and then like with Gen X, it's actually like 31%. Statistics are like statistics. So it's like man. But also I feel like I'm way more open to talk about mental illness. What are your thoughts on how like, technology impacts, communication at work or even in personal lives? I think, technology, I'm not the hugest tech person when it comes to like using technology, especially at, like I guess within school made it easier to contact my professors. 00:30:54:19 - 00:31:25:11 Chloe But also, I think it opened the door of being more like, I guess, real and like honest through email and communication. I think there are definite drawbacks and that, like you were saying, because sometimes I'm once it's like written and you have something in writing, it can be used against you 100% and it's documented. So you have to be very careful with what you say, how when you send an email, I don't know when sending an email at 2 a.m. at night was like bad like like it would send an email at 2 a.m.. 00:31:25:11 - 00:31:47:04 Chloe He had am I professors because I would be freaking out about a project. But you know, but it's also like that email could have waited while and I could have had time to decompress, figure things out on my own. It's more like I need this instant. Like I need it now. Like you need to respond now. and I, I do tend to do that a lot. 00:31:47:06 - 00:32:14:20 Chloe but, yeah, I think technology has impacted my generation in a positive but also slightly negative way as well. I can see both of your perspectives. like validating something that my grandpa, my grandfather, said, before he transitioned, he, he's from a silent generation, and his heart went out to us like everyone after us because he just could not understand, like, emails at work. 00:32:15:02 - 00:32:45:04 Shaniqua When my grandfather went to work, he went to work at 6 a.m., he got home at 5 p.m. and work stayed at work. And that was one of the things that he said helped him, you know, decompress or work through conflict was because if he got upset with, you know, someone on his team, he had the night to think over it, to decompress across like because he found out early on it wasn't necessarily the person it was what's going on. 00:32:45:06 - 00:33:02:13 Shaniqua He felt overwhelmed or anxiety, you know, from the situation. So he had time to think about it at home and then go into work fresh versus now he was seeing like it could be very, stressful to like, be on the clock, essentially. It's like they they make it very challenging. to the point I, you know, Ed was speaking about having a warped sense of work ethic. and it's like when, when we think about work life balance, which I have been trying to consciously shift to life work balance, because let's set our priorities right and we should we should be living, you know, and, and then working in that context. 00:33:29:07 - 00:33:55:21 Stephanie And so it really does matter. I and I'm always encouraged when I see Gen Z, for example, or even millennials do it to a lot more, setting those boundaries, creating the right space. You know, and just I think it's really important. Yeah. So I'm curious for both of you, what are your opportunities to participate with other generations. I have some that are, you know, young in my generation, but most of all, my friends are millennials are the ones I like consistently talk to. And engage with. My, boyfriend's a millennial. and I appreciate the maturity aspect of it. growing up, I think I transitioned in college where I was like, man, everyone's just like partying and doing this and that, and I didn't want to party. 00:34:29:20 - 00:34:56:04 Chloe I wanted to focus on my grades in school, and I kind of just became friends with grad students. And that just kind of like motivated me because it was like, no one's making dumb decisions. No one's going out at like night and driving while they drank, which happens a lot, especially in my generation. and I know that probably happened with millennials, but they're at that age now where I remember we were going to a club and we all drank. 00:34:56:04 - 00:35:15:10 Chloe Having a good time, and then they're like, okay, we're going to call the Uber. Let's split it. And I was like, an Uber. We're taking an Uber. They're like, yeah, Chloe. Like, you can die if you're drinking time. Like I know, but like I've never had friends who were this mature about it. and so they were like well from personal experience like now that we're older. 00:35:15:10 - 00:35:34:08 Chloe And so I kind of after that was like, I want to surround myself with people who are smart, mature, already established, in life. Yeah. and I think sometimes parenting can, require kids to stay inside, but I think kids naturally enjoy exploring. It's from what I understood, from curiosity. Kids are curious. So I think that, some parents may, give their kid technology to see, to give them space and time. 00:38:59:07 - 00:39:42:06 Shaniqua So maybe we should start looking at parents, whether the parents are giving technology versus, like, blaming or saying shaming kids for technology. So that's my first takeaway. Then my second takeaway was about like that, about generations, like how we also categorize generations. I think that there's some nuances to it because, as you mentioned, like Gen X being like the first like latchkey kids, because like, that was where, like women, the generation where women went to work as a black person, it was, something to celebrate when your mom got to stay home because it's like black women have always work. 00:39:42:06 - 00:40:05:05 Shaniqua So I grew up as a latchkey kid as well, and I know younger generations of, black and brown kids are also latchkey kids. So I think it's also like something that is like more nuanced and like, I think the generation conversations that are divisive are broad strokes versus like looking at individual, individuals and their upbringing. But I do think that there's a real reality in a, in a real large group, especially of the older generation that have like sort of convinced themselves that, you know, this isn't the truth, but I think like the, the, the converse of that is also the takeaway that like, regardless of what generation's exposure have been to technology that all generations are sort of of like, love hate relationship with it, the, as much as we perceive that, you know, Gen Z or millennials or whatever may be like, you know, the tech group or whatever, it's been thrust upon 00:41:08:10 - 00:41:40:05 Stephanie them in many ways, you know, and they've had to adopt and, and all of those things. But it's like everybody seems to want to be able to create that space and and kind of control, you know, their own energy and how it gets accessed.
